Frequently Asked Questions

Why are birth outcomes better with a doula present?

Doulas are there to provide continuous support to the birthing person. And in doing so there is less of a chance of needing any pain medication or epidural. Studies have shown that having the support of a doula leads to fewer assisted births, and newborns are four times less likely to have a low birth weight.

How do doulas differ from my OB/Midwife?

Midwives and OB’s provide medical care throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Whereas doulas provide you and your family physical, emotional and informational support. Midwives and OB’s have medical training and focus on delivering a healthy baby. Doulas focus on the needs of the birthing person and not the hospital and medical staff. Doulas support the birthing person’s right to advocate for themselves and make their own decision about their body and baby.

Does a doula replace a partner?

Partners are there to support the birthing person emotionally. They know you best and what your needs are. During labor, doulas provide continuous support to the partner and can take over if they need to grab and bite or use the restroom. Doulas are there to support the partners as well and encourage and coach them to better support the birthing person. Doulas and partners together make a pretty powerful team.

Can a doula attend C-section births?

Even during C-sections, a doula will not leave your side. If baby needs to go to the nursery, your partner can go with them. If it’s a planned C-section, a doula can act as a liaison and help bridge the gap between patient and provider. They can help you get answers to questions that you may have and can also help explain the procedure.

When is the best time to hire a doula?

Doulas can be hired as soon as you find out you are expecting. Usually it is preferred to hire a doula around the second trimester. It can give us time to get to know eachother and be able to have a good understanding of what your goals are. Don’t worry if you have a late start because it never too late to have that support.
